As industries demand more precise data, sensors are required to become smaller, more sensitive, more energy-efficient and easier to deploy at scale. Traditionally, those requirements have forced sensor developers to choose between size and performance. Innoseis has overcome this challenge with a patented MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) technology that delivers exceptional sensitivity and accuracy in a sensor that’s the size of a microchip. This results in a new generation of sensing solutions for applications ranging from geophysics and navigation to robotics and space exploration.

Innoseis’ MEMS sensors are capable of detecting extremely small vibrations and converting them into actionable data. By combining exceptional sensitivity with a micro-chip form factor, the company enables sensing at a scale that was previously impractical or impossible. This allows larger sensor deployments, higher-resolution measurements and more detailed insights into complex physical environments, from the subsurface of the Earth to the surface of the Moon.

“Our sensors are designed to distinguish the smallest movements and vibrations from all the noise around them. The fact that we have maintained that level of sensitivity in a sensor the size of a microchip makes it possible to conduct measurements that were previously impossible. That’s exactly why our technology has even been selected for future geological measurements on the Moon” says Mark Beker, CEO and co-founder of Innoseis.

The company traces its roots back to the Dutch National Institute for Subatomic Physics (Nikhef), where founders Mark Beker and Jo van den Brand researched the detection of gravitational waves. The expertise developed there, now forms the foundation of Innoseis’ sensing platform.

Today, the company’s technology is already being deployed internationally to the Australian space technology company, Fleet Space Technologies, which aims to enable geological measurements on the Moon. Beyond space applications, the company sees strong opportunities in geophysics, navigation, robotics, and other markets where highly accurate motion sensing is critical.

“As demand for high-precision sensing continues to grow, we believe Innoseis is well-positioned to become a category leader.” says Arjan Göbel, General Partner at FORWARD.one.

For the Innoseis team, the funding marks an important milestone. Over the past years, the company has transformed a scientific challenge into a commercial technology that has proven its value in multiple applications. “Many of our colleagues have seen this technology grow from the very first prototypes into products that are now being deployed internationally.” says Matthijs Heeres, COO of Innoseis. “We have not only developed disruptive sensor, but we’ve also built a company with an incredible team around it. Seeing everything come together at this moment is something the entire team is extremely proud of.” says Shanine Hoost, Business Manager at Innoseis.

With the new investment, Innoseis is preparing for its next phase of growth and further expansion of its development, team and operations. Our ambition is to become the global market leader in our field. To achieve that, we need to scale our production capabilities. Thanks to FORWARD.one’s investment, we can streamline our production chain while simultaneously expanding into new markets.” – Mark Beker, CEO & co-founder of Innoseis.

Together with our partners, we kicked off the URGENT project in Mol, 🇧🇪 Belgium!

Europe needs to decarbonise its heating sector, and geothermal energy can significantly aid this transition by providing heat for buildings and industries, especially in urban and #industrial areas. However, its deployment is limited due to insufficient knowledge about geothermal resources.

To reduce pipeline costs and heat losses, geothermal sources must be located close to heating networks. This requires a deep understanding of geothermal #reservoirs near and within urban areas. #Seismic exploration is crucial, but it hasn’t been widely conducted in cities due to historical focus on oil and gas, as well as technical limitations.

Starting June 2024, URGENT is revolutionising geothermal exploration in urban and industrial settings, enhancing the #reliability of subsurface data in various geological conditions.

URGENT aims to accelerate the decarbonisation of Europe’s heating sector by advancing the use of geothermal energy in urban areas. The project tackles the challenges of urban exploration by developing sustainable and affordable solutions for seismic exploration of geothermal resources.

What URGENT delivers:

2 novel seismic exploration technologies (by Innoseis Sensor Technologies and Seismic Mechatronics BV)

Machine Learning (ML) post-processing methods (by dGB Earth Sciences)

A risk management toolbox (by AGH University of Krakow and VITO) for project risk and performance management

Integrated exploration strategies (by realtimeseismic and all partners) for de-risking geothermal projects

Test sites include:
1. VITO site in 🇧🇪 Belgium, led by VITO
2. Konin site in 🇵🇱 Poland, led by AGH University of Krakow
3. Batta site in 🇭🇺 Hungary, led by MOL Group

Innoseis Sensor Technologies has been selected, along side 10 other consortium partners to tackle some of the most demanding technical challenges for the realisation of the next generation gravitational wave detector Einstein Telescope. Innoseis ST will be providing its expertise in the field of high sensitivity, cutting edge inertial sensing. Not only will this lead to further scientific advancement but also to new and valuable commercial spin-off activities. More information about the project can be found here, and below (in Dutch).

Einstein Telescope Technologies

This has caught the attention of the European Space Agency who is interested to better understand what this could mean for the navigation of satellites in orbit, but also for the guidance of deep-space missions.

Innoseis ST and ESA will work together on a project to determine the accelerometer’s key performance characteristics for use in space as well as simulated results on their impact for certain missions.
